Newell B. Smith, 78, Sandstone, passed away at the Pine County Memorial Hospital at Sandstone on Sunday morning, November 24th after a long illness.
Mr. Smith was born at Winona, Minnesota on September 22, 1890, the son of George and Elizabeth Smith. He was married to Eleanor Yira on March 23, 1914. She passed away on April 16, 1957. He was subsequently married to Beatrice Ascher on December 2, 1961.
A veteran employee of the Great Northern Railroad for 47 years, Mr. Smith retired in 1952 as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of the Great Northern Brotherhood of Engineers and Sandstone Masonic Lodge No. 234. He had been a resident of the Sandstone community since 1920.
Surviving him are his wife, Beatrice, three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn (Joe) Gjertson of Wenatchee, Washington, Mrs. Betty (Elmer) Holznagel of Mora and Mrs. Louise (Irvin) Lundorff of Sandstone; a son, Newell, Jr. of Monroe, Wisconsin, two brothers, Richard of Superior, Wisconsin and Herbert of Madison, Wisconsin; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Mullins of Phoenix, Arizona and Mrs. Florence VanDerBerg of Largo, Florida; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church at Sandstone on Wednesday, November 27th at 2 p.m. with Rev. Richard Landeen officiating. Mrs. Lee Dybvig was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Donald Sandwick. Casket bearers were Carl Pearson, Virgil Sjodahl, Arnold H. Larson, H.T. Kroning, Nels Lundorff and Al VanDerWerf. Masonic services were held at the Larson Funeral Home Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Burial was in Spring Park Cemetery at Sandstone. Larson Funeral Home, Sandstone, made the arrangements.
