John Edmundson Gilbert was born to Thomas Gilbert, son of Cary and Eunice Chandler Gilbert, and Sarah Edmundson, daughter of John S. and Elizabeth Reagin Edmundson. His mother Sarah died in January of 1843 just a few months after he was born, and his father married again just a short time later. For whatever reason, in the 1850 census, John is living with his grandfather John Edmundson in Giles County rather than his father, step-mother and half-siblings in Limestone County. In 1860, however, he is living with his father and family in Limestone County.

John E. Gilbert would marry and live out his life in Giles County while his father and many half-siblings would eventually move to Texas.

The following is an excerpt of a letter written by Mary Ann Cooper Anderson who was the daughter of John S. Edmundson's third wife Eleanor. Eleanor was the widow of Henry Cooper. In the previously mentioned 1850 census, Mary Ann and her husband James are living in the John S. and Eleanor Edmundson household along with 7 year old John E. Gilbert. Mary Ann wrote this in a letter to tell of her and her mother's condition during the Civil War. Many thanks to Louie Edmundson for passing on this letter.

"We received a very interesting letter from our boy as we call him, John E(dmundson) Gilbert, dated the 4th inst. before the fight though. He is with Bragg. He was in good health, and in fine spirits. . . . We are very anxious to hear from John (i.e., after the battle). He was in the battle of Shiloh, received a slight injury the first day, not sufficient to keep him out of the second. He holds the rank of 3rd Sergeant. He went into the service last October. We have not seen him since the first of Dec. It is a great cross to be parted from him so long. He is very dear to us, yet we feel our country is worth the sacrifice. We hope and pray for peace, that loved ones may be restored to their homes. Sometimes we think we can see indications of its coming, yet we have hitherto been disappointed. . . ."
