William was born 17 Jun 1783 in Rowan Co., North Carolina to Sarah (Patterson) and William Butram. His father, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, lived many places, finally migrating from Wayne County, Kentucky to White County, Tennessee during his old age. He died there and was buried in the Richard Bradley Cemetery near his last home.
The younger William married Nancy Stinson, daughter of Mary and George Stinson, on 19 Feb 1807 in Lee County, Virginia. They migrated to Wayne Co., Kentucky in 1809, bringing their first child, Joel, with them. They settled first in the Mount Pisgah area, where they joined Bethel Baptist Church at Parmleysville; then they moved to what is now known as the Sunnybrook community. Nancy and William were the parents of twelve children: Joel, Mary, Elijah, Sarah, Ephraim, Jacob, Ahial, William J., Jonathan, John Calvin, Martin Luther, and Nancy Bertram. All of their children except Joel were born in Wayne Co., Kentucky.
Around 1848 William and Nancy, and their children who stayed in the area, began spelling their last name as BERTRAM. William and Nancy became known as "The Parents of the Wayne County Bertrams" for this reason.
Nancy and William became Charter Members of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at Sunnybrook when it was founded in 1841 and remained faithful to the church the rest of their lives. They are buried there in the church yard with many of their descendants.
