Charles H. McNamara, Former State Official
STOUGHTON -- Charles H. McNamara, 71 of 1340 West Street., former state commissioner of agriculture for 12 years, died unexpectedly yesterday at Brockton Hospital.
A lifetime resident of Stoughton, he was a graduate of Deerfield Academy and the University of Massachusetts.
A prominent dairy farmer he was appointed commissioner of agriculture in 1957, and served until 1969.
Mr. McNamara was a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts, and was currently trustee of the Farm Bureau Association.
He was a member of the Agricultural Club and the Stoughton Historical Society. A town meeting representative, he also served on several town school building committees and was chairman of the high school building committee.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary A. (Sheehan) McNamara; two sons, Charles H. McNamara Jr. and Edward F. McNamara, and a daughter, Mrs. Juliann Gitto, all of Stoughton.
Other survivors are two brothers, Lawrence J. McNamara of Medford and James F. McNamara of Stoughton, and seven grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Our lady of the Rosary Church. Burial will be in Dry Pond Cemetery.
Visiting hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lowe & Powers Funeral Home, 115 Monk St.
