His grandfather John J. Hall Sr. was born on a ship bound for America. His father John J. Hall Jr. was born on July 15, 1776 in Virginia. His mother Elizabeth Whisman was born on June 22, 1800. They got married on March 9, 1819. They had eight children, including Philip.
Philip was a surveyor and lawyer, and he lived on the Middle Fork of Masons Creek. He married Elizabeth Branson on September 3, 1846, and they had nine children: Clarinda (b. 6/29/1847); Mary Ann (b. 10/2/1849); John Henry b. 6/18/1851); James M. (b. 1/22/1855); Eli (born 3/7/1857); Sally (born 2/4/1859); Nervesta (b. 1/20/1861); Lucinda (b. 5/6/1863); and Columbus C. (b. 5/27/1867). They also adopted a little girl named Mary (born 1862).
Philip was known as "Uncle Philip" in the area. He may have been involved with other women. It is known that he fathered a child with Lucinda Jenkins before he got married to Elizabeth. Lucinda had their daughter Rachel Ramada, who was born in January of 1847. Rachel always used the last name of Jenkins, but it clearly shows that Philip Hall was her father, on her death certificate. Rachel died in 1929, in Ozark, Missouri--she had married Samuel Cornett Jr.
