John Walter Levering was married to Elizabeth Bainbridge, daughter of Stephen Albert Bainbridge & Mary Ellen Exton in 1895. The marriage record named him James Walter Levering.

Walter became president of Eavenson & Levering Co., which he founded in 1902 with Alban Eavenson. The plant processed scoured wool into yarn. In 1906, it was relocated to Camden, new Jersey, and incorporated in 1916. Production levels eventually reached 50,000,000 pounds of wool a year. A major employer, at one time the company had 500 production workers and 100 employed in other capacities. It also became the world's largest wood scouring and carbonizing company.
After he died, son Frank D. Levering succeeded him, and when Frank died in 1943, grandson John Levering became Chairman of the Board. Grandson F. Weir Levering became president of Levering-Riebel Printing Company at 1845 Haddon Avenue in Camden.
On Dec. 7, 1951, the firm closed, due to changing market conditions.
According to abstract of a Florida death certificate, he died 15 Feb 1937, Armatelle, Lake, FL, aged 67y. His spouse was named as Elizabeth B. Levering and his parents were John R. and Mary Weir Levering.
