James J. Browne of Dorchester, a decorated Korean War veteran and retired stationary engineer for the town of Braintree, died Friday at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain after a lengthy illness. He was 77.
Born in Firies, County Kerry, Ireland, he immigrated to the United States in 1947.
Mr. Browne served in the Army during the Korean War, earning two Bronze Stars and a field promotion.
He was a stationary engineer for the town of Braintree, Electric Light Department, Local 379. He retired in 1998 after 29 years of service.
Mr. Browne was a longtime member of the Kerry Football Club of Boston and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He was an active member of St. Peterís Parish in Dorchester.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Gill); four sons, Thomas of Londonderry, N.H., Brendan of Dorchester, Daniel of Billerica and Patrick of Westford; three daughters, Mary Browne and Anne McCarthy, both of Dorchester, and Noreen Tremblay of Barre; a sister, Margaret Browne of County Kerry, Ireland; 17 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. today at St. Markís Church, Dorchester.
Burial will follow in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Arrangements are by Murphy Funeral Home, Dorchester.
