Birth: Apr. 8, 1814
Death: Sep. 3, 1902

Elizabeth (James) Coffin was born in 1814 in Newport, R.I. and descended from one of that city's earliest families. Her father, William James (1776-1819) lost his life at sea off the coast of Virginia.

Elizabeth and younger brother Benjamin James were sent to live with their mother's brother Robert Carter and his wife Nancy Carter (née Topham). An elder sister, Maryann James, remained (it's presumed) with her widowed mother for a time but eventually married Rhodes Arnold. Mary Ann Arnold is also buried with her sister Elizabeth Coffin and mother Ruth (Carter) James (1783-1859) at the same lot at Rural Cemetery.

Elizabeth James married Shubael Cottle Coffin 13 August 1836 and they lived in New Bedford, Mattapoisett, Marion, Rochester and finally Middleboro, Massachusetts.

Both Elizabeth and Shubael C. Coffin are buried at Rural Cemetery, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
