Services for John Oliver Barnes, 90, of Temple will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Robbins and the Rev. Hubert Austin officiating.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Elm Grove Cemetery in Mabank.
Mr. Barnes died Friday, April 8, at his home.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1920, to George Willis and Mary Margaret Payne Barnes in Van Zandt Co. He served in the Marines during World War II and Korea. On July 14, 1945, he married Allegra G. Gibbs. He earned a bachelor's and a master's degree from Sam Houston State University. He was a member of Lions Club International and supported the Bell County Youth Fair and Livestock Show. He served on the board of directors for Agricultural Workers Auto Insurance Co. in Fort Worth. He was a rancher and was the assistant state director of the Farmers Home Administration. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Temple Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his wife on March 29, 2009.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol McDonald and Judy Johnson, both of Temple, and Kay Allen of Austin; a sister, Mary Helen Janek of Lake Buchanan; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to The Heifer Project; to First United Methodist Church; or to Elm Grove Church in Van Zandt Co.
Viewing will be 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple.
