Matilda was my 2nd Great-Grandmother.
She was the fourth of seven children born to Archibald McBride HILL and Mary Floyd RUTLEDGE.
She was married to Enos Mitchell CAMPBELL in about 1852 in GA.
Enos fought for the South in the Civil War and was taken prisoner. He was held at Rock Island Prison in Illinois and died there in January 1865 of smallpox. Family stories have always said that Enos was sneaking home at night to visit his family, since his regiment was stationed nearby. Some men in his regiment were jealous of him, so they turned Enos over to the North. Matilda's brother, Charles Hill, was commander of Enos's regiment.
Enos and Matilda had six children together:
Charles H. (1853-), John E. Daniel "Dan" (1854-), Archibald Thomas, Richard Wiseman (1858-1922), Mary Elizabeth and Caroline M. (1863-) Campbell.
