Dr. J. Sam Brown, 83, Outstanding
Rural Doctor, Succumbs at Ghent


Dr. J. Sam Brown, a physician in Carroll and Gallatin Counties for almost 60 years and a recipient of the Ky. Medical Association's distinguished service medal, died at his home in Ghent at 12.00 p.m. last Thursday [July 1, 1954] at the age of 83.

The noted doctor, who had practiced in and about his home town since the age of 20, had suffered a stroke Tuesday.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lura Bond Brown; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Virginia Petersen of Colorado, and a sister, Mrs. Josie North, Ghent.

The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ghent Baptist Church with Carlton and Bickers in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Brown was born in Wytheville, Va., and moved to Ghent at an early age. He studied medicine in Louisville and began practice in Ghent with his father, the late Dr. M. C. Brown.

He had delivered some 3,000 babies, friends said.

Dr. Brown was well known throughout medical circles in Kentucky and received the distinguished service medal from the K.M.A. in 1948. He was also active in the American Medical Association.

For several years he was chairman of the Tri-County Health Board of Gallatin, Trimble and Carroll Counties.

For some two years, Dr. Brown served Gallatin County almost exclusively on home calls when this county had no resident physician.

He was a member of the Ghent Masonic Lodge and a steward in the Methodist Church.

Dr. Sam Brown is Stricken in Ghent

Dr. Sam Brown, 83, well known physician of Ghent, Ky., died at his home there July 1st from a heart attack.

Dr. Brown was the Dean and president of the Gallatin, Carroll, and Trimble County Medical Association and had practiced medicine for more than sixty years. He had many patients, suring that time, from this county.

He was a native of Wytheville, Va., but had resided in Ghent since boyhood.

Surviving are his widow, the former Lura Bond, a daughter, Mrs. Virignia Peterson of Colorado, and his sister, Mrs. Josie North of Ghent.

Funeral rites were held at the Baptist Church in Ghent on July 3rd and Interment was made in the Ghent cemetery.
