Charles was born in Ashtabula Harbor, OH, to William Charles and Alice Murphy Burchfield, the 5th of 6 children. At age 5, his father died and the family moved to Salem, OH, where he spent his boyhood.
On May 20, 1922, he married Bertha Kenreich of Greenford, moving to Buffalo, and by 1926, his 4th child is born.
Charles was an author and a well-known extraordinary visionary landscape artist in his time, who developed his own style of a symbology of pulsating life, with a simple eye and painterly application. He worked in various media including oil, watercolor, and etching. By 1917, he started including memories of his boyhood in his work.
He exhibited widely and much is written about is life. His Christianity influenced him, although some biographies downplay his faith. Part of his vision was his unique expression of God's creation. The evidence of God working in this artist's life is self-evident.
