John Dennis Devine
May 27, 1940 to July 3, 2013
John, known as Denny to his family, was born at home in Sewickley, PA, in the house that was built by his father, Alfred P. Devine, and grew up there with his mother, Irene Evans Devine, and his four siblings, Rene Devine Gittens (Mel), Patrick Devine (Barbara), Mollie Devine, and Karen Devine Shong (Everett). John met the love of his life, his wife Rose Marie Villella Devine, in 1958 and they married shortly thereafter. They celebrated 54 years of marriage this January.
He is survived by Rose and his children John Michael Devine (Anita), Denise Devine Baldwin (Greg), Julie Anne Devine, Mary Devine Bailey (Eric), and Christopher Adam Devine, along with 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John and Rose moved their family to California in the late 60s, while John started his career in law enforcement, working for South Gate PD, and then moving north and spending many years with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriffs Department, retiring in the mid-80s. John and Rose decided to seek out adventure and traveled across the country for several years before settling in Santa Maria to be close to family, his number one priority. John was well known for his humor and his unfailing wit-just ask him how he's doing and you're likely to get an answer of "Any better and I couldn't stand it!" John Dennis was a man of faith, and we are deeply saddened by his passing.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, July 13, at 2:00 at Rancho Buena Vista Clubhouse, with a reception to follow. The Clubhouse is located at 2135 North Railroad, Santa Maria, CA.
