Bernard J. Cler, 80, of Pendleton, Ind., formerly of Tuscola, died Sept. 4, 2003 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Cler was the son of Henry and Hilda Schneider Cler. He married Patricia Reveal on May 14, 1949, in Anderson, Ind. She survives with their five sons, Fred Cler of Muncie, Ind., David Cler of Laguna Beach, Calif., John Cler of Pendleton, Ind., Jerome Cler of Arlington, Va., and Charles Cler of St. Louis; a daughter, Barbara Rund of Gurnee; a brother, Paul Cler of Villa Grove; two sisters, Helen M. Buck of Rantoul and Juanita Henderson of North Carolina; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and a sister.
Mr. Cler was a machinist at Delco Remy and an accountant at Firestone Tire Co. in Indianapolis. He was a colonel in the Air Force and flew combat missions in the Vietnam War. He served at the Pentagon with Air Force Headquarters and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Cler spent most of his career in the Strategic Air Command and retired in 1975 after 33 years. He received a bachelor of science degree in military studies while in the Air Force and a bachelor's of fine arts from Ball State University after retirement.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Fortville, the Pendleton (Ind.) Lions Club since 1976, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Cler enjoyed blacksmithing and metal sculpture.
Burial is in East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Ind., with military rites accorded by VFW Post 266.
