Helen had attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade school in Crittenden Township, near Pesotum, Illinois.

She was strangled to death with a scarf around her neck when she came home the evening of Saturday, December 28, 1946. Just as she was opening the door of her rooming house in Champaign, Airman PFC Maurice T. Garret stationed at Chanute Air Force Base at Rantoul, Illinois who was from Akron, Ohio. The airman confessed and admitted that he felt "overwhelming desire to strangle her and I did". He was traced to the barracks after a pair of blood stained gloves were found under her body when they discovered the body about 3 o'clock in the morning. He has also raped her. The body was found by another girl who lived in the rooming house as she returned home with a friend. She and her parents had previously been living in Pesotum about three years prior. Her parents had moved to Philo about 1943.
She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Crittenden Township, in the rural area of east Pesotum, Illinois. She was 18 years old.
