Elmer Ray Summarell, age 82, of Vernal, passed away January 14, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 20, 1930, in Roosevelt, to Samuel Henry and Vilate Labrum Summarell. He married JoeAnn Taylor on Nov. 14, 1950, in Vernal. Their marriage was solemnized on June 29, 1964, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Ray served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He worked for over 28 years at the Chevron Phosphate Plant. He enjoyed wood working and fixing cars. He was proud of his 1939 Ford and 1940 Ford which he bought shortly after their marriage. He enjoyed attending and entering his cars in various car shows. In his younger days he was a stock car racer.
He was an excellent wood worker, making bird houses, cars, trucks, and diesels – many with doors that opened, steering wheels that turned, and pedals that moved. He was a good story teller and always liked a good practical joke. His big heart helped him have many friends and he would help everyone and anyone in need. He had a fondness for animals, especially his dog, Jake. His favorite past times included hunting, fishing, and camping in the great outdoors.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and father-in-law who will be deeply missed.
Ray is survived by his wife of over 62 years, JoeAnn of Vernal; children, Joe (Terry) Summarell, Neola; Lynn (Reta) Summarell, Bridgeland; Terry (Patty) Summarell, Vernal; Cindy (Dave) Moore, Roosevelt; Lisa (Doug) Jensen, Vernal; 9 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brothers- and sisters- in-law, John Taylor, Ken and Elaine Taylor, Donna Thompson, all of Vernal; Glenda and Tony Perea, Magna; Ed and Sharon Taylor, Derby, Kansas; Barbara and Gary Mullins, Duchesne; numerous nieces and nephews, and his dog, Jake.
