Funeral services for former Carlton resident Jewel Haveman of Newberg will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at West Chehalem Friends Church. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Newberg under the direction of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Haveman died at Friendsview Manor in Newberg on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007. She was 84.
Born Nov. 9, 1922, in Enid, Okla., she was the daughter of John A. and Susie Jane (Misenhimer) Williams. Her family moved many times before they settled in the Carlton area.
As a child, Jewel attended White Cloud Elementary and Carlton High. She worked several years at the Carlton Glove Factory before marrying Eldon E. Haveman on Sept. 3, 1944.
They spent about seven years in the Portland area. After living briefly in McMinnville, they relocated to the Chehalem Valley in 1951. She had been residing at Friendsview Manor for the last five years.
She was a long-time member of West Chehalem Friends Church and Rural Homemakers Club. She volunteered at the Newberg Thrift Store and belonged to the Christian Women's Club.
She enjoyed traveling, especially trips to the Netherlands and annual deer-hunting expeditions to the Ochocos. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, crafts working and collecting toothpick holders.
"Jewel was known by all as a real 'jewel'," the family said.
Mrs. Haveman is survived by a son, Randall W. Haveman of Newberg; three daughters, Tamara Kay Larson of Newberg, Marsha Robinson of Otis and Tonya Van Bueren of Winthrop, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Juanita; and two infant grandchildren.
