Enlisted as private in Co. F, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 7 August 1862 at the age of 26. Mustered Out on 30 June 1865 at Nashville, TN.

Married Amanda Leitner November 22, 1858 They had 8 children, the oldest two Charles Franklin (1859-1861) and Mary Elizabeth (1861-1861) died before the war Adam Alvin (1862-1942), Wilhelmina Barabeau (1866-1953)Sarah Jane "Jenny"(1869-?)William Edward(1872-1953)Anna Louisa (Lulu)(1875-1953)and Harry Emery(1878-?)

Emery was a cobbler and earned extra money during the War repairing the Officers boots.
