Enlisted as a corporal in Co. A, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 11 August 1862. Appointed sergeant on 22 February 1863. Sgt. Crawford was part of a relief expedition that was sent on 24 September 1864 to relieve and reinforce Ft. Henderson at Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. While the relief detachment was fighting to attain the fort, the fort commander surrendered. Forrest's troops then forced the relief expedition to surrender as well. Sgt. Crawford was sent to Cahaba Prison, exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865, near Memphis, TN. Mustered Out at Columbus, OH, on 20 May 1865.
