Rockford - Marilyn M. Dykstra, 86, of Rockford, was received into Christ's arms on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012.
She was born June 2, 1926, in Anita, Iowa, to Stella Mae and Charles Wesley Garlock. She attended school in Anita, where her father was superintendent of schools, and in Spring Hill, Iowa, where she graduated from High School.
Marilyn received a primary teaching degree from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, and there met the love of her life, Robert Dale Dykstra. Bob and Marilyn married June 1, 1947. Marilyn taught school for 2 years in Greenfield, Iowa, 1 year at Longfellow School in Sheboygan, Wis., and 2 years at Wight School in Rockford. She loved to teach young children, serving as a substitute teacher for 25 years in the Harlem School District.
Marilyn lived in Rockford for the past 64 years. She attended Christ United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of the Martha/Mary Circle of Christ. She swam daily at the Millennium Center, and enjoyed archery and fishing with her husband and children. Marilyn was an ardent Green Bay Packers fan and followed the University of Illinois, where her three children graduated.
She was the mother of three children, Gregory (Joan), Larry (Janet) and Susan (Mark) German; the grandmother of Philip (Abbie), Elizabeth, Peter, Stephen (Janet) and Wesley German, and Katherine (Dane) Bernau; the great-grandmother of Alex Dykstra and Ella Bernau; and the sister of Eula (Woodrow) Putnam, Helen (Warren) Zimmerman, Anita (Wilbur) Rust and Charlotte (Robert) Jamison.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents, Stella and Charles; and siblings, Wesley (JoAnn), Robert (Joanne), James (Caryl), and Ruth (Wayne) Canine.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church, 4509 Highcrest Road, Rockford, with the Rev. Jane Eesley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Machesney Park. Olson Funeral & Cremation Services Ltd., Rockford, is handling arrangements.
Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association.
