Armin was born the son of John K. and Rachel L. DeCotes in Binghamton New York, County of Broome. Armin's father was born in Lithuania in 1879, his mother in New York in 1892. Armin's father operated his own Barber Shop, and his mother was a Land Lady, renting rooms.
1930 census shows four other brothers in the DeCotes family:
John P. 11
Armin J. 9
Alevin L. 4
Norman D. 2
In the 1940 census, Armin's two older brothers, Laurel and John P., worked as musicians in an orchestra, while he himself worked as a chauffeur.
Armin married Miriam R. Dickerson, daughter of Ray R. Dickerson and Florence Stone.
Armin and Miriam served the Lord together throughout their marriage, most in Christian pastoral ministry. Armin held several pastorates along life's way.
They had four daughters in their family.
I and my fiancee met Armin one day in the summer of 1972 at The Four Seasons Department store in Tuscola IL. Armin worked there part-time and was pastoring a church in Newman IL. We "hit it off" well, and he said he would like the honor of doing the ceremony if we should decide to marry. We said "Yes". He married us on February 17 1973.
We worshiped with Armin's congregation and greatly enjoyed fellowship with he and Miriam. They would sometimes ask us to stay after the worship meetings to eat snacks and drink iced tea around their kitchen table. They were gracious, young-at-heart, and fun to be with.
I named my first-born son after Armin, which gives witness to the esteem in which I held him.
He and Miriam moved on to Indiana to pastor and we lost touch with them. An announcement from the university newsletter:
Indiana Central University Alum of 1952
Former student Rev. Armin J. DeCotes
has been named the pastor of the
Sunnyside Road Church of God in Indianapolis IN.
I was saddened to hear of his passing. He and Miriam were living in Illinois at the time of Armin's death.
