Birth: Aug. 6, 1817
Death: Mar. 19, 1901

Temperance and Suffrage Activist. Thedaughter of an Indianapolis physician and sister-in-law of Richard Gatling, the inventor of the Gatling gun, Wallace later served as Indiana's First Lady from 1837 to 1840 and became first president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which organized in Indianapolis in 1874. One of her step-children, Lew Wallace, became an army general and the author of "Ben-Hur." She was described as an "inspiritual speaker who could give impromptu two-hour lectures." Lew Wallace identified his step-mother as the model for Ben-Hur's appealing mother. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
