"...Jacob Gochenour, Jr. was born in Shenandoah Co., VA near Woodstock. He married Elizabeth Rhodes or Roads, whose family lived near Luray, and in which half were massacred by Indians. The Roads and the Gochenours were Mennonites in faith. Jacob and Elizabeth settled on the land which she had obtained from her brother Joseph Roads on the east side of the Shenandoah River adjacent to where Toms Brook flows into it.Jacob bought other land on the opposite side of the River where he operated a flour mill until the time of his death in 1809. This is not far from the present town of Luray, VA."
1785 Census, Wayland's Shenandoah county history: Jacob Gochenour (Coughener) is listed as living in the area from North Mountain to Massanutten, including Mt Olive, Toms Brook.
"First Census of the United States" under "Heads of Families-Virginia 1783": Jacob Caughenhour has eleven white person in his house and no black (slaves). this is a state census. The first federal census of 1790 of this county was destroyed by the British burning of the Capitol in Washington, 1814.
Jacob Jr. & Elizabeth had 13 children identified by his will: Mary, (then deceased) m. Fisher; Elizabeth, m. George Howbert; Barbara, m. Phillip Bare; Ann, m. Jacob Fisher; Esther, m. David Stover; John; Catherine, m. John Crabill; Jacob; Magdalene, m. John Stover; Daniel; Rebecca, m. Henry Jordan; Joseph; and Shen (Samuel).
The will was made 13 Oct 1809, probated 13 Nov 1809. Jacob Gochenour died October 27, 1809.
