Kathleen Lowther

A retired teacher, Kathleen Lowther, died this morning at the Emporia Rest Home. She lived and taught in Oklahoma City, Okla., for many years. She was an aunt of James Lowther, Emporia.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 A.M. at the Patio Garden in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Lowther Fund at the Emporia Public Library may be sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Kathleen Lowther

A graveside service was to be held this morning at the Patio Garden in Memorial Lawn Cemetery for Kathleen Lowther, who died Friday at the Emporia Rest Home. The service was to be conducted by the Rev. Allen Denton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lowther Memorial Fund at the Emporia Public Library, sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Miss Lowther was born in Cottonwood Falls, Sept. 27, 1895, the daughter of Lloyd A. and Loretta Thistle Lowther. She attended Emporia schools. Her father was superintendent of schools in Emporia for many years, and the family home was at 617 Exchange St. Miss Lowther graduated from the College of Emporia in 1918 and later received a Master's Degree in education from Columbia University, New York, NY.

She taught for a time in Abilene before going to Oklahoma City where she was a mathematics instructor at Central High School from 1920 until her retirement in 1960. She edited several mathematics textbooks and according to members of her family, "did a lot of tutoring." She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, the Retired Teachers Association and a number of professional teachers' organizations. She had been a resident of the Emporia Rest Home since December 1979.

Miss Lowther is survived by a nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. James Lowther, Emporia; two great-nieces, Rebecca Guilfoyle and Anne Lowther; and two great-great-nieces. One brother, Eugene T. Lowther, died June 17, 1969.
