The son of Samuel Martin Baker and Mary Amster Carver Baker. He married Betty Lumpkin of Springfield. They settled at Burnett's overseer's cottage, known as Dry Bridge because the bridge to it ran over the RF&P railroad. Baker farmed and ran a store in the house. There was a counter in the front hall. During the War he served with the Hanover Light Dragoons, Fourth Virginia Cavalry - CSA. He enlisted on August 11, 1862 and was paroled on May 25, 1865 at Ashland.
