Virginia B. Shears, 75 of Lubeck died Sunday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in Wood County, a daughter of the late Virgil B. and Grace Haverty Merrill. She was a graduate of Parkersburg High School. She moved to Baltimore, Md in 1941 and returned in 1973 with her husband, Mark, after he retired from the B&O Railroad. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past treasurer of the Parkersburg Woman's Club and was the present state president of the Kings Daughters and Sons. She was a dressmaker by profession, and had lent her talents to the Actors Guild and the production of the "Eden on the River."

She is survived by two daughters, Marianne Poston of Tucson, Ariz., and Janet Kirk of Lubeck; one granddaughter, Julie-Lyn Welling of Athens; three grandsons, Dean Kirk of Columbus, Mark Poston and Bradford Poston, both of Tucson; and one great-grandson, Timothy Kirk of Parkersburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Mark Dean Shears; and one brother, Harold Eugene Merrill.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Clifford Phillips officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and until the hours of services Wednesday.
