Alvin W. Metzger, 83, of Wakarusa, Ind., died Wednesday at home following an extended illness.

He was born on September 8, 1923, in Dunn County, Wis., to Harvey R. and Mabel (Miller) Metzger. He married Betty Miller on July 28, 1950. He was self-employed as a mechanic for 26 years and was a member of Old German Baptist Brethren Church.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Becky (Ezra) Crist of Goshen, Ind., Lois (Curt) Peters of Bradford, Ohio, and Gloria (Robert) Riley of Nappanee, Ind.; two sons, Russell (Jeannette) Metzger of Goshen, Ind., and Dan (Debra) Metzger of Mishawaka, Ind.; five sisters, Joyce (Eldo) Brovont of Goshen, Ind., Olive (Paul) Stull of Goshen, Ind., Carol (Herman) Royer of Nappanee, Ind., Ruth (Willard) Wrightsman of Goshen, Ind., and Bonnie (Joe) Blocher of North Manchester, Ind.; one brother, Glen (Martha) Metzger, of Goshen, Ind.; 23 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Wilma Purdue.

A prayer services will take place at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. service on Saturday, January 27, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, Ind.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Old German Baptist Brethren Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of Elkhart County.
