Andrew Jackson Butler was born in New York about 1832.

According to the National Park Service's website for Civil War Soldiers and Sailors, he served as a Private in the 1st Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery. He enlisted on August 15, 1862 and was discharged on June 26, 1865.

Both before and after his military service, Andrew worked as a carpenter. He married Sarah Priest of Canada on August 11, 1857 in Dearborn, Michigan and the two of them made their home initially in Ohio, then later in Michigan. In 1880, Andrew and Sarah were living in Nankin Township, Michigan with their children Abram, Robert, Leah, John, Mead, Fannie, Joseph, Dallas and May. The date and location of Sarah's death is unknown.

In 1906, Andrew married Henrietta W.W. Ferchan in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both he and Henrietta stated that they were residents of Kalamazoo at the time of their marriage.

Andrew died sometime after 1906. He is buried here with his parents and his daughter Leah. His military marker has no dates of birth or death.
