Gen Martín Miguel de Güemes
Birth: Feb. 8, 1785
Salta, Argentina
Death: Jun. 17, 1821
Salta, Argentina

Military Figure, Patriot. One of the strongest leaders in Argentina's fight for independence from Spain. Born in Salta, Argentina, he joined the Spanish military in 1799 and distinguished himself in battle against attempted British invasions. In 1810, shortly after learning that the Spanish monarchy had been deposed by Napoleon I, Guemes became a general in the newly-formed Provincial Militia and spent several years fighting off Spanish royalist incursions. He ultimately gained control of the entire northern region of Argentina. At first he governed well, but his plans for tax and land reforms lost him the support of wealthy landowners and led to his assassination. His remains were reinterred at the new Cathedral of Salta in 1918. (bio by: Nes Pagani)
