Fireman and Trimmer Joseph De Bono, S.S. Stonepool of West Hartlepool, Merchant Navy died at age 33.
Built in July 1928 by Smith's Dock Company, Ltd in Middlesborough, England, the Stonespool's homeport was West Hartlepool. In the very early hours of September 11, 1941, she was sunk off the coast of Greenland, northeast of Cape Farewell and south of the Denmark Strait. There were 49 aboard; seven survived. The attacking boat was not identified with certainty but is believed to have been the German U-207, which was in turn sunk by the British destroyers HMS Leamington and HMS Veteran.
