Captain Bruno de Solenni, of Cresent City, California. A 1994 graduate of Del Norte High School, he was raised in a family with a strong work ethic and commitment to make the world a better place. He went to work for a tree cutting business, then worked in the crabbing business, purchasing his own boat. Enrolled at Southern Oregon University, he joined the Oregon National Guard in 1997. Bruno graduated from the college in 1994 with a B.A. in history. Bruno felt he needed more direction in his life, and with a strong interest in the military and thinking about the hardship his grandfather, a veteran of both WWI and WWII had endured, he felt he was making the right choice. He went through the Guard Officer Leadership Development program, and on May 2, 2001, was commisssioned a 2nd lieutenant. After the events of September 11, 2001, he knew his life and that of the people of this country would be changed forever. He served in Sinai, Eygpt the following year as part of the MFO and was home for eight months before volunteering for a tour of duty in Iraq. He returned home with a positive attitude of what he and his fellow soldiers were accomplishing there. But he was resentful of the way the media portrayed them. He saw in himself that the time he served in Iraq turned him into a man, an officer and some one who was making a difference in the lives of others. Captain de Solenni wrote many emails and letters thanking the people and journalist who supported him and the people serving in the military. These helped fuel more support and he thanked them for the difference they made. Bruno had amazing charisma, his whole body was a smile. Future plans included marrying his fiance and a wish for six children. Deployed to Afghnaistan nine months ago to train Afghan soldiers, assigned to the Joint Forces Headquarters, Element Training Team, Oregon Army National Guard, he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Bruno was laid to rest in a coffin handmade from some of the logs that he fell. It was constructed by his friends. He is survived by his mother California Martin; his father Mario de Solenni and his wife Linda; his twin brother Ricardo and his wife Autumn; his brother Gino and his wife Athena, all of whom reside locally, and his sister Pia and her husband Rory Conway, of Philadelphia; seven nieces and nephews: Caitlyn, Jaelyn, Julia, Mario, Giancarlo, Sophia and Olivia; two aunts, Jan Martin and Mary Freeman, and a special friend, Farrah Bates, along with numerous extended family members in Italy, Alaska, Arizona and Virginia.
