Birth: Dec. 24, 1976
Corvallis
Benton County
Oregon, USA
Death: Jul. 16, 2006
Baghdad, Iraq

Army Staff Sgt. Evey was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 10th Calvary Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, Fort Hood, Texas. Evey died of injuries sustained when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle he was commanding ran over an improvised explosive device during combat operations. Jason grew up in Oregon and was a Boy Scout. He loved hiking, camping, river rafting, fishing and taking photographs. He graduated from Corvallis High School before moving with his family to northern California. He worked in Stockton and took classes at both Pacific and San Joaquin Delta College before enlisting in the Army in 2000. Jason wanted a job that gave him a chance to be out in the world and not stuck behind a desk. He also liked the idea that he could become a leader someday. He had been in Iraq since November serving as a cavalry scout and troop commander. His job was guiding the Bradley vehicle, which meant he was typically perched at the top, with his head and shoulders exposed to the outside so he could direct the driver. In recent months, he had been stationed in southern Baghdad, helping to patrol the area and keep the roads and highways clear of bombs. In e-mails home, he said his camp was taking mortar fire almost every night. He was thankful the enemy fighters were terrible shots.
