Birth: Aug. 11, 1873

Death: Jan. 20, 1945
Green River

Daughter of Austin Ship Mayhew and Martha Jane Walker

Wife of Benjamin Smith Gibbons, married 1 Jan 1894 in Giles, Wayne , Utah, USA

They have 8 children.

My mother, Martha Medora Mayhew was born August 11, 1873 in Pleasant Grove, utah. When she was about six years old, her father decided to go and settle the country where Moab is located now. They got as far as the River then Grandmother backed out and wouldn't cross it so they turned their old wagon around and back to Pleasant Grove they came. While in Emery County Grandfather scouted around looking for a new country and saw what he called Graize Valley, but it really turned out to be Blue Valley where they went later on.
In 1884 they set out for Blue Valley. My mother, Dora had dyptheria on the way. They arrived in Loa, Wayne Co., utah, Nov. 18, 1884; then journeyed on to Blue Valley. They had very poor schools there with mostly just eighth grade students to teach them.
She married Benjamin Smith Gibbons- January 1, 1894 at Giles, Wayne Co., Utah. Eight children were born to them, four boys and four girls. Two boys and one girl died in infancy. They spent most of their married life in Hanksville, Henry Mountains and a few winters in Green River, Emery Co., Utah.
There wasn't much thought about religiion in our home until their children were all married and had families of their own. But during the year of 1934 Mother and Dad were at my sister, Myrtle Wharff's home. Mother became very ill with pneumonia. The doctors said they could do no more. The Relief Society sisters came in and washed and annointed her and gave her a blessing. then the Elders administered to her. She was soon up and about. This really caused father to open his eyes. he began right then to serve the Lord and on Dec. 26, 1935 they were married in the Manti Temple and later, were able to have every one of their children sealed to them for time and all eternity.
My mother, Dora was a very wonderful wife and mother. Everyone loved to come to our home. They were always made welcome. Mother died jan. 20, 1945, at Green River, Emery, Utah and buried in Elgin Cemetery, Grand, Utah.
