W.C. French was the son of William A. French of N.Carolina and Rhoda French of S.Carolina. He came to Navarro Co. before 1850 and was the first settler at Navarro Mills, where he owned interest in the first flour mill in the area. During the Civil War, he ranked as 3rd Sgt. under Capt. Samuel Wright's 19th Regiment Texas Troops. Col. N.M. Bufford, C.O. The people of Navarro Mills honored him because he was a church leader and had great interest in his community.
