Helen was the second of five daughters of Tommie and Lula Mae Lefors. The family moved to East Texas in 1930 during the oil boom. They settled in Rusk County in the community of New London.
Helen began first grade and graduated from the London Independent School District. She was a survivor of the school explosion of March 18, 1937. She continued her schooling first at Tyler Junior College and then Kilgore Junior College where she was a member of the drill teams at both colleges.
She married David J. Korkmas Jr. on May 4, 1952, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tyler, Texas. After their marriage they moved to Houston. She lived there for 56 years.
Helen was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Anthony. She reared two sons and was very close to her daughters-in-law. She was very proud of her five grandchildren.
Helen worked as a receptionist secretary for several businesses. But her passion was using her talents as a mother and homemaker; she was an organizer, a cook, a hostess and a decorator as well as many other roles.
During her lifetime, she excelled in the hobbies she chose. She was a talented seamstress throughout her life, her paintings were beautiful and she began researching family genealogy later in her lifetime getting excited each time she had new information to share for the family trees.
