The son of John & Elizabeth (Livelsberger) Kennell, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in Carroll County, Maryland, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had sandy hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. B, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry. He contracted typhoid fever in October 1862 and then sunstroke while on the march in August 1864. After the latter health issue, the army transferred him to the ambulance corps. He is listed as "in arrest" November 1864, but his compiled military service records make no further mention of it, and he honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865 Those same service records spell his surname "Kennal."
He married Esther Lucinda Hedrick (Livelsberger also reported but may have been confused with his mother's maiden name) August 26, 1866, in Baltimore, Maryland, fathering Laura Cornelia (b. 06/03/67 - married James Albert Easton) and Howard Cheston (b. 09/26/69). He lived in Adams County until 1881 before moving to Maryland near Woodbine, Carroll County. He abandoned his pension - most likely because he died - and that document does not contain his exact date of death.
