History - Richard was raised by a family with the last name of Cannine, that is where his middle name comes from. He has a twin brother, Andrew Smith Gibbons, who was raised by the Smith family. Their mother died of complications from the birth, and their father could not raise them along his other children alone. Andrew was raised by a family that was distantly related to Joseph Smith. Andrew was sealed in the temple to the Smith family, but he retained the Gibbons surname.
Union Township where he was born is now known as Hebron.
At the age of 25, Richard was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John L. Smith. On December 19, 1850 he received his patriarchal blessing from Patriarch John L. Smith. In April 1851, he was ordained a Seventy by Joseph Young.
