Aaron Elisha Norton was born, February 3, 1896, in Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas, to James and Hattie A. Norton. He had three sisters and one brother. Shorty moved to New Mexico and was stock farming at Rincon, New Mexico. On June 5, 1917, he signed up for the draft for WWI in Dona Ana County, New Mexico and served his country. When the war was over, Shorty came back to New Mexico. He stayed for a time in Datil, with his sister and her family. Shorty met Naomi Mickey, whose family had moved from Lockney, Texas and settled south of Pie Town. Naomi was but 13 years old. They spent the summer going on outings with friends and going to dances. They were married in December of 1923. They lived on Shorty's ranch at Bear Canyon. They had two children, a boy and girl. They lived a happy life, raising their livestock and socializing with family and friends, but tragedy befell this family in 1943, when Shorty and his son were moving some cattle on the range. It was coming up a storm , when lightening struck, killing both Shorty and his horse. The boy was not injured. Naomi was devastated, but managed to struggle on and take care of the ranch and send her daughter to high school in Reserve, New Mexico. Shorty was buried in the Divide Cemetery near the foot of Alegra Mountain.
