Steven was the son of John and Vivian Abbott. He had two brothers, Dennis Harold and Larry, and a sister, Sherry Abbott Rueberg. Steven was a helicopter pilot with the 1st Air Cavalry Division and had been in the service of his country two years when he was killed in action in Vietnam, where his tour of duty had begun on 24 Mar 1968. He was flying with D Company of the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion on a reconnaissance mission as an armed escort, and while his helicopter was at 300 feet it was shot down by enemy ground fire. He is honored at Panel 58E - Line 29, on The Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Among medals awarded to Steven were the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with Gold Clasp and Loop, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device, the Sharpshooter Badge and with Machine Gun and Rifle Bars, the Marksman Badge with the Automatic Rifle Bar, and the Army Aviator Basic Badge.
