STATESBORO - Mr. Eugene L. "Gene" Denmark, age 74, died Wednesday at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Bulloch County native was a 1950 graduate of Nevils High School, and retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service. Mr. Denmark worked for 22 years for Franklin Chevrolet, 10 years with Altman Pontiac and for 10 years as a bailiff for the Bulloch County Sheriff's office. Mr. Gene was a Post Commander of the American Legion Post 90, and a member of the Statesboro Jaycees. Mr. Denmark was an active member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as a Bible Study teacher with the Frank Williams Bible Study Class, and a member of the Men's Brotherhood. Mr. Gene loved life, people, family and his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Augustus and Gertrude Hagan Denmark; and a brother, James A. Denmark.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Margie Allen Denmark of Statesboro; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patti D. and Denis George of Statesboro and Cindy D. and Greg Hodges of Savannah; two grandchildren, Travis, and his wife, Jennifer Clark, and Fulton Hodges; three great-grandchildren, Logan Clark, Carlie Clark and Dustin Clark; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gussie and Charles Strickland of Pembroke and Margaret and M.E. Ginn of Statesboro; two sisters-in-law, Shelvie, and her husband, Franklin Hagan, and Jewel, and her husband, Linwood Bowman; several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Randy Waters officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens with Elder W.H. Durrence officiating.
Pallbearers are Phil Denmark, Jimmy Ginn, Jere Ginn, Brian Hagan, Larry Bowman and Mike Bowen.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, 4 South Zetterower; or to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
