John was a veteran of World War I entering the service in 1917. He was a member of B Battery 148th Field Artillery and went to the front in July of 1918, engaging in four battles. He was at the front continually from July to Nov. 1918. Following the armistice his battery section was sent to Germany for 6 months service. He left Germany in May, 1919 and sailed home from France on June 2, 1919. He was honorably discharged on June 18, 1919.
He was buried with military honors. Buddies from the war were his pall bearers. The American Legion Post of Midvale headed the long and impressive funeral cortege. At the cemetery, Military Taps were sounded and the volley was fired, making it a very beautiful ceremony.
