Mr. Christian Berger died Monday at 1:40 a.m. at his home in Murray where he had lived for 63 years. Mr. Berger was eighty five years of age, and his death was caused from infirmities incident to age.
Mr. Berger was born in Switzerland December 23, 1847, a son of Christian and Magdalena Zaugg Berger. He came to America and crossed the plains to Utah with the J.D. Ross handcart company. He walked the entire distance across the plains and his family located at what was then known as Little Cottonwood.
When he was 22 years of age Mr. Berger married Miss Magdalena Buhler. The ceremony was performed by Brigham Young. Soon after their marriage they bought a 20 acre lot on the corner of State and Fifty Ninth South streets, and had lived there since.
Mr. Berger was an active member of the L.D.S. church and in 1876 was called to the Arizona mission to help colonize that territory and in 1882 was called on a mission to Minnesota.
Surviving are two brother, John and Gottlieb Berger of Murray, a sister, Mrs. Rosetta Williams of LaGrande Oregon. Mrs. Williams arrived from Oregon Wednesday evening to attend the funeral.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Christian and Magdalena were not blessed with children. They devoted their lives to the LDS church and genealogy work. His method of keeping the records were of great interest to the church and they had his books for many years. They have been returned to the family.
