George Francis "Bud" Fernandez, died April 7, 2006 in Gainesville. He was born on December 10, 1919 in Pensacola. Married Billie Matthews of Little Rock, AR on June 7; she preceded him in death. One sister, Mrs. Betty Haynes of Pensacola survives him. He is also survived by his children, Stephanie Shirley, Jennilee McCauley, Robert A. Fernandez, George M. Fernandez, Raymond S. Fernandez, Billie Jo Cohen, Shelley A. Stanfield, and Timothy D. Fernandez. His son, SFC William M. Fernandez and grandson, MSG George A. Fernandez, both killed in action while serving in defense of this country, precede him in death. 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive him. Bud served in the U.S. Army from 1944 until 1972 achieving the highest enlisted rank of Command Sergeant Major. During World War II he was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman's Badge. Upon his retirement in 1972, Bud began his second career with the University of Florida Athletic Association retiring in 2003 after 31 years. He was the equipment manager for the Gator Football team and later served as the Director of Athletic Equipment. He worked over 200 games in the "Swamp" at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and is a member of Nike Collegiate Athletic Council and the Work Sporting Goods Advisory Board. In March of 2000 he was inducted into The University of Florida Athletic Hall Fame and became a member of the "F" Club. In March of 2002 the University of Florida South End Zone equipment room was dedicated in his honor. In 2003 Nike presented him with the prestigious Winged Goddess of Victory, which is given for loyalty, dedication and commitment to the swoosh. Bud proudly served as a mentor and father figure to several generations of young gators. In 2005 was named Alachua County Red Cross Volunteer of the Year. He is a member of Holy Faith Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 10th, 11AM, at Holy Faith Catholic Church, Gainesville.
