Enlisted on 3/13/1862 at Fredericksburg, VA. for the duration of the war, he was mustered into "M" Co. VA 55th Infantry as a Private.
Absent, sick at hospital on 3/12 - 6/1/1862 Roll.
Absent, detailed guarding baggage at Rapidan Station, VA. 8/20 thru Nov & Dec 1862 Roll.
Present on all rolls until "sent to rear sick" 6/14/1863.
Present Jul & Aug 1863 roll.
After suffering dislocation of hip, he was "detailed for light duty Sept 8, 1863" on Sept & Oct 1863 Roll through end of war: nurse at C.S.A. General Hospital, Stauton, VA. and Chimborazo Hospital #5, Richmond; detailed as carpenter & cabinetmaker at Chimborazo Hospital #5.
The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers. It was assigned to General Field's, Heth's, H.H. Walker's, and Barton's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia.
It sustained 110 casualties at Chancellorsville.
In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
