MERLE RAYMOND BENNETT

Merle Raymond Bennett, son of Joseph and Sarah Bennett, was born in Chariton, Iowa, September 25, 1894, and passed from this life at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, January 24, 1957 at the age of 62 years and 4 months.

He grew to manhood in Lucas County, and enlisted in the Army of the First World War on February 25, 1918. He was honorably discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, May 21, 1919, with the rank of Corporal - Battery C - 319th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a member of the Russell American Legion.

On May 20, 1923 he was united in marriage to Hazel Dixon of Russell. Their home was located in and near Russell until 14 years ago when they moved to a farm in Wayne County. One daughter, Leanna, came to bless this union.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved companion, Hazel, the daughter, Leanna Wardlow, of Philadelphia, Penn., a granddaughter, Lucinda Ann, son-in-law, Duane Wardlow, also 3 sisters and 2 brothers, Mrs. Blanche Feight of Chariton; Mrs. Gladys Moore of Long Beach, Californis; Mrs. Lillie Johnson and Clell Bennett of Russell; Moss Bennett of Adel, Iowa, also many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maudie.

Merle was well known in Wayne and Lucas Counties thru his activities as a farmer and stockman. He was respected as an honest, upright citizen by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed in the family circle and in the community.

Funeral services were held at the Miley Funeral Chapel Sunday, January 27, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. E. Beals. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery with the American Legion in charge of graveside services.
