Louise F. Ames, 91, died peacefully, Thursday, July 13, 2006 at St. Joseph's Manor in Portland. Born in Fanuel, Massachusetts, December 1, 1914, she was the daughter of Oscar E. and Emily Small Langer. Educated in Belfast schools, she was valedictorian of the 1932 graduating class of Crosby High School.
In 1941 Louise married Edgar A. Ames in Belfast. The couple moved to Thomaston, until purchasing the Hyler Farm in Warren in 1945. It was then that they began operation of Ames Ice Cream which they operated until 1980. Louise's store became known throughout the mid-coast by her famous "pistachio ice cream cone mailbox." Her homemade ice cream was an annual summer treat for Mainers and vacationers alike.
Following the death of her husband in 1983, Louise began working with "Grandma's House Child Care Program" at the Second Congregational Church of Warren. She was also past President of Ladies Social Circle at Second Congregational Church of Warren, and a member there for many years. She enjoyed her time there until moving to Portland in 1986, making her home with Reverend Mark Rustin and his family.
She was past President of Ladies Social Circle of Second Congregational Church of Warren. At the time of her death Louise was a member of North Deering Congregational Church, and was a member of its Ladies Guild.
Mrs. Ames was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by Rev. Mark and LaVerne Rustin and their son John, all of Portland; many friends; extended family at St. Joseph's Manor, and former employees who remember her with fondness.
A graveside celebration of her life will be held at Village Cemetery, Thomaston. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
