James was oldest child born in Subiaco, Arkansas, to John and Rose Seidl Eckart. His mother died when he was ten leaving his father with five children ten and younger to care for. His father remarried about a year later taking Margaret Kriener as his bride. His brother Charles was born a year later. He was educated through the eighth grade at Subiaco Academy and later moved with the harvest to Texas. He met Angeline Walterscheid while both were working for Johnny Zimmerer near Lindsay. They were married on October 22, 1940, in Sacred Heart Church. James was inducted into the Army in 1945 and spent 6 months in training and then was honorably discharged because he had three children at home. James was the proud father of 11 children. He loved to garden and paint pictures. He was a long time custodian and janitor at Muenster Public School.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Angeline, and all eleven of his children: daughters, Mary Ann Koesler, Betty Simmel, Agnes Hesse, Rose Black, and Dolores Hofbauer, and sons James, Jr, Donald, Jerry, Mike, John and Steve Eckart, brothers Gilbert, Albert, Leo and Father Stephen Eckart, and a sister Bonnie Parque.
