|Birth: ||May 19, 1853|
|Death: ||Sep. 12, 1940|
He was the son of John Back Jr. and Elizabeth Cope.
He was a fascinating man, with a strong spirit and lots of opinions. He knew what was right, and what was wrong, and that was that.
He usually wore black pants, a white shirt, a black hat, and boots. He had a very commanding presence, and people respected him. He had a great deal of influence around Quicksand Creek.
Miles was married three times and he fathered at least twenty-two children. Two of those children were born stillborn, and one of them (Henry Chester Back) was born out-of wedlock, to Malissa Strong Back, during the time between the death of his first wife Clementine, and his marriage to his second wife Siller. (Malissa was the widow of Miles' brother Alfred.)
Please see the listings for each of his three wives to get the names and DOBs for his children (see below).
Miles owned thousands of acres of land around Quicksand Creek. He sold 15,000 acres to the Mowbray-Robinson Lumber Company which built a massive sawmill in his front yard, and then clear-cut all of the trees, destroying the environment.
Miles established the Miles Back Cemetery, on a hill out behind his house. His second wife, Drusilla "Siller" Keith, was the first person buried there. He was buried next to her. His third wife, Lenora Watson, was also buried in that cemetery. (His first wife was Clementine Spurlock, and she was buried in the Spurlock Cemetery.)
