Joel was the son of Jared & Henrietta (Tuttle) Dickerman of Hamden, Connecticut. He was a corporal in the 20th Connecticut Inf., Co. I. and was mortally wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.

Joel has a cenotaph at the Central Burying Ground, Hamden, Connecticut.
