Private, Co. C, 18th Massachusetts Infantry

Thomas H. Atwood was the son of Joshua and Hannah Atwood.

Thomas was a 23 year-old Shoemaker from Carver, when he enlisted in that town on Sept. 17, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlin of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry, and was mustered into the Regiment as a Private in Company C. Per muster records he was 5 ft. 7 in. tall with a dark complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes.

After enduring a harsh winter encampment at Halls Hill in Arlington, Virginia, Thomas was admitted to Seminary General Hospital, Washington on March 2, 1862 with chronic bronchitis and subsequently transferred to the General Hospital at Broad and Cherry St., Philadelphia on March 8, 1862. He was later transferred to the Summit House Gen. Hospital, Philadelphia on June 20th and discharged from military service on June 28, 1862.

Following his military service Thomas resided at Plymouth, MA from 1863 to 1865, Wakefield, MA until 1870, and at Central Falls and Pawtucket, RI from 1870, where he was employed as a Barber. He married Roxanna Burnham, born at Lincoln, RI and the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah. Roxana was 32 when she died of strangulation at Central Falls, RI on Aug. 16, 1879.

Thomas married for a second time to May Etta Merry, age 22 and the daughter of Charles W. and Harriet P., at Pawtucket, RI on Sept. 29, 1880. They were the parents of Clinton Henry, born at Pawtucket on March 29, 1894.

Thomas was the recipient of an Invalid pension due to respiratory disease related to his military service. He was 70 years of age when he died of chronic bronchitis at his home 102 Central Ave., Pawtucket, RI. His wife May applied for and was granted a widow's pension in 1908, but was dropped from the pension rolls when she remarried in 1912.
